Led by employers and sponsored by Skills for Justice, LIFT has been awarded over £1.6m from the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government. The Leadership Integrated for Tomorrow (LIFT) programme  aims to increase collaboration in the Justice Sector through the development of management and leadership skills.

There is an increasing emphasis on creating specific Welsh strategies in respect of justice issues to facilitate greater responsiveness and to support the Welsh Government’s vision for the creation of a fully inclusive society. In particular, youth justice policy remains under very active development in Wales.

Led by employers and sponsored by Skills for Justice, LIFT has been awarded over £1.6m from the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government. The project focuses on improving management and leadership skills to identify areas where collaboration can maximise delivery of a range of services in the justice and community safety sectors.

The programme has been developed by employers from across the sector  and aims to increase co-operation between public and third sector service providers, to increase efficiencies both in cost and delivery of service.

Building on the skills of our public service sector will help to modernise and improve the quality of those services in Wales

The specific skills gaps which LIFT seeks to address include:
- Change management and leadership, particularly in the ‘middle’ layers
- Performance and people management
- Strategic planning and performance management
- Collaboration  and  multi-agency working
- Improving the flexibility and adaptability of the workforce and enhancing transferable skills
- The ability to deal with continuous change within the sector in response to political and legislative demands

The programme provides a 2 day collaboration workshop followed by a programme of learning that will be delivered at two levels. The levels are linked to the ILM (Institute of Leadership & Management) levels, i.e. level 3 for first line and aspiring managers and level 5 for middle managers and aspiring middle managers. There is the option for you to undertake a full Award (which will result in a qualification) at each of these levels. Alternatively, individuals can choose to focus on the personal and organisational outcomes without the full qualification. If you will be undertaking the qualification, then additional tutorial support will be provided.
The courses give you credits towards Leadership and Management Institute Level 3 and Level 5 qualifications and in some cases completion of only one course can enable you to gain a qualification.
The programme is available to all organisations operating in the Justice and Community safety sector in Wales, as outlined earlier. Organisations that are currently involved include:

- Police
- HM Prisons
- UK Borders Agency
- Youth Justice Board
- Fire and Rescue Service
- HMCTS
- Black Association of Women Step Out (BAWSO)
- Numerous voluntary organisations such as Victim Support, Kaleidoscope, Drugaid, and Welsh Women’s Aid.

The courses are funded by the European Social Fund with the “match” coming from the time you spend on the programme. Full funding is available if you live or work in a convergence area. If you are outside a convergence area, please do contact us so we can discuss your options.
